If you’re interested in microneedling, you’ve probably come across the term “RF microneedling” as well. What’s the difference? Are the two procedures similar? To help you decide which of these procedures you might be better suited to, here are some of the basics on traditional and RF microneedling.

How Does Microneedling Work?

Microneedling works by creating micro-injuries, or micro-channels, in the skin using tiny needles. In professional settings, this is achieved using a pen-like tool containing the microneedles; for at-home use, dermal rollers containing microneedles are available, but not generally recommended by professional dermatologists or aestheticians.

Creating micro-injuries in the skin stimulates your natural healing response, prompting the body to create new collagen and healthy skin cells. These micro-channels also allow topical products to more deeply absorb into the skin. In some cases, serums or similar skincare products are applied to the skin after microneedling.

How Does RF Microneedling Work?

RF microneedling combines traditional microneedling with radiofrequency energy. This ultimately enhances the procedure’s collagen- and elastin-building effects for improved skin tone, texture, and elasticity. There are several RF Microneedling systems available. At Laser Skin & Wellness, we use the Vivace RF Microneedling system. In addition to radiofrequency energy, Vivace RF Microneedling introduces dual LED lights to the procedure. Red LED lights further stimulate collagen, while blue LED lights help to destroy bacteria to treat or prevent acne.

Vivace RF Microneedling sessions begin with a numbing solution that is applied to the skin so you remain comfortable. Then, your specialist will adjust the Vivace system according to your needs, such as adjusting the needle depth. The Vivace system is motor-controlled, making it extremely precise and effective. The process takes about 45 minutes to complete, and most patients have about 3-5 sessions scheduled about a month apart.

What Can RF Microneedling Treat?

RF microneedling has a variety of applications. The treatment can be used for virtually any area of the body, and most patients choose to have RF microneedling for their face, neck, or hands. Primarily, RF microneedling is used to soften signs of aging, such as wrinkles, fine lines, or mild sagging. RF microneedling is also useful in treating acne scars or surgical scars and stretch marks.

Microneedling is a versatile skin care treatment, making it a very popular choice for many of our patients. The treatment works by stimulating collagen production through a series of micro-injuries. At-home dermal rollers and other microneedling systems are available, however, these treatments are not as effective or safe as professional microneedling treatments.

At Laser Skin & Wellness, we have different options of RF Microneedling: the Vivace RF and the Morpheus8, which combines radio-frequency energy and microneedles to further stimulate collagen production and kill acne-causing bacteria. This system offers a variety of benefits to our clients.

Vivace RF and Morpheus8 Microneedling devices, are incredibly versatile treatments, useful for a wide range of skin concerns. They can be used to improve:

  • Skin laxity
