IPL Photofacial: Treat Sun Damage and Reduce Pore Size

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment, which is also referred to as photorejuvenation, helps reverse sun damage and reduce pore size. Patients may also notice that the skin’s overall surface looks more luminous and their skin condition is improved. LimeLight is Cutera’s trademarked IPL device, and it’s the only programmable treatment on the market. This device allows us to more accurately customize your Intense Pulsed Light therapy to your skin type.

How Does IPL Photofacial Work?

Intense Pulsed Light selectively treats the red or brown pigmented areas of the skin. It does this by emitting light waves which are absorbed into the pigmented skin cells such as the melanin in brown spots or the hemoglobin in facial veins. This causes the area of pigmentation to fade from the surface of the skin, leaving behind clear, luminous skin. IPL therapy remains one of the most effective facial rejuvenation technologies available.

What Areas Can Be Treated With IPL?

The IPL Photofacial treats most areas with sunspots, redness, or freckles. The most popular areas for treatment are the face, neck, chest, shoulders, arms, and hands because they are areas most often exposed to the sun. Sun exposure can cause premature signs of aging like sun spots, fine lines, and texture.

IPL Photofacial treatments are effective for many different concerns and skin conditions including uneven skin tone, redness, acne scars, spider veins, broken capillaries, skin texture, facial redness, vascular lesions, brown spots, skin discoloration, and age spots. Because IPL’s broad spectrum light energy creates gentle heat in the deeper layers of the skin, it also stimulates collagen to rejuvenate aging skin.

What Does IPL Photofacial Feel Like?

When the handpiece is placed on your skin, it will feel cool and comfortable. When the pulse of light is delivered, you will feel a brief, stinging, heated sensation, similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. Many patients find IPL treatment to be very tolerable, but we can supply a numbing cream if needed.

Who is a Good Candidate for IPL Photofacial Treatments?

If you have light or medium colored skin, you may be a good candidate for the IPL Photofacial. It is also safe for sensitive skin or for patients who are prone to facial redness like rosacea. If you have a darker skin tone or tanned skin, IPL treatments may not be the best option for you. We can discuss other treatments and your best skin rejuvenation options at the time of your consultation.

IPL can easily be combined with other skin treatments like chemical peels or skin resurfacing. Our team will help you develop a personalized treatment package that includes IPL skin treatments.

What Can I Expect Afterwards?

Immediately following the IPL Photofacial treatment session, the spots may start to darken. You may notice a slight reddening of the surrounding skin. This typically subsides within a couple of hours. During the next one to three weeks, dark spots will start to fade and flake off. Expect some swelling for about a day or two if you have diffuse redness on the veins – it should subside in a few days.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are IPL results permanent?
No, unfortunately all non-invasive aesthetic treatments are not permanent because we continue to age. IPL removes sun damage so if you continue to go in the sun, you will need follow-up treatments.
  • Can IPL make brown spots worse?
No it is unlikely that IPL would make a dark spot worse. More likely, if under treated, the spot would stay the same.
  • Should you moisturize after IPL?
We always recommend keeping the skin moist following any treatment
  • Can IPL remove pigmentation?
IPL is the gold standard device for removing pigmentation.
  • Does IPL help wrinkles?
IPL does not help wrinkles. Multiple treatments may improve fine lines. More importantly, IPL helps lighten and brighten the skin.
  • How long does IPL last for rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic condition. We recommend a combination of IPL and Genesis to control but it is not cure for rosacea.
  • How long does it take for brown spots to fade after IPL?
It takes 10 days to 2 weeks for the brown spots to fade after an IPL treatment.
  • Is IPL or Microneedling better?
We believe it is important to have both Microneedling and IPL to provide maximum results.
  • What is an IPL Photofacial?
Photofacial is a term coined by one of the laser companies to describe their IPL device. It is trademarked so only they are allowed to use the name. That is the only difference.
  • Does IPL cause swelling?
IPL can cause temporary swelling but usually it will only last for a couple of hours.
  • How long after IPL can I use retinol?
We ask that patients wait until after the dark spots flake off before using any retinols.
  • How long do IPL results last?
The results of IPL can last up to a year.
  • Is IPL a laser?
IPL is an acronym for Intense Pulsed Light. It simulates the wavelength of a laser but is not an actual laser.
  • What are the benefits of IPL treatments?
IPL is great for lightening and brightening skin and reducing pore size and texture.
  • What are the side effects of IPL treatment?
It is easy to create stripes on a patient if there is a lot of pigmentation or if the overall color of the patient is beyond a Skin Type III.
  • Can IPL increase hair growth?
An IPL can mimic a wavelength that is used for hair removal. If the provider undertreats the area, it can stimulate hair growth.
  • Can you do IPL on eyelids?
No Laser or IPL should be done over the eyelids unless metal shields are inside the eye and it should only be done by a physician.
  • Does IPL burn fat?
No, IPL does not burn fat.
  • Does IPL help dark circles under eyes?
IPL does not help dark circles.
  • Does IPL get rid of thread veins?
IPL can get rid of very fine veins that create overall redness.
  • Does IPL shrink pores?
Yes, IPL can help diminish pore size!
  • How long after IPL can I exfoliate?
We ask that patients wait until after the dark spots flake off before doing any exfoliating.

How Many IPL Treatments Will I Need?

Typically, one to three IPL photofacial treatments are sufficient to see dramatic results. Additional treatments may be required for very dark spots or excessive sun damage. We recommend yearly maintenance IPL treatments to continually fade pigmentation and sun damaged skin.

When Will I See Results?

Most patients see significant improvement within two to three weeks of IPL treatments. However, your final IPL Photofacial results may not be apparent for several months. Your final results will be a significant improvement in the overall brightness and clarity of your skin with a reduction in pigmented spots, facial redness, and signs of aging. In order to maintain your results, we recommend you practice an effective normal skin care routine, wear daily sunscreen, and avoid sun exposure.
