Today, there are many ways to relieve pain but not all of them are healthy. Pain management is important, since most people lead extremely stressful lives that can take a toll on nearly every aspect of our well-being.
Some methods such as massage, yoga, and meditation are great ways to unwind, but many people have not explored the pain-relieving benefits of an ancient art: acupuncture.
Acupuncture can be used for many purposes and to treat a number of ailments, often achieving results that are inaccessible through other methods.
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture uses a series of very thin needles, inserted into specific points on the body. This accesses the “chi” or energy flow of the body to improve well-being and to treat pain. Sometimes, low-level electrical current, gentle heat, or light pressure is also used during the process.
Uses for Acupuncture
Acupuncture can provide relief in some cases of pain and illness. Some of the conditions that acupuncture has been known to help improve include:
Does Acupuncture Hurt?
Many people are afraid of needles, and it’s not unusual for people to be afraid of the acupuncture process at first. However, acupuncture needles are extremely thin (almost hair-like), and the provider is highly skilled in application of the needles for treatment.
Due to these factors, generally the only sensation you’ll feel is slight pressure, sometimes accompanied by tingling or numbness during treatment.
Are There Side Effects?
The occurrence of side effects is very low. In fact, the only causes for concern would either be treatment from an inexperienced provider or infection from non-sterile needles.
Reputable practitioners only use a fresh, new pack of needles for every treatment. You should always make sure this is the case for your treatments.
