Cellulite…that dreaded word that strikes fear in the hearts of so many women (and even some men!).

Why is it so scary? Because although it has to do with the body’s fat cells, it does not respond to diet and exercise the way excess fat does.

Causes

It is more common in fair-skinned people, as the “orange peel” appearance is more noticeable. Some factors that can influence its formation include:

• Lifestyle & Diet: Smoking, lack of exercise, not drinking enough water, and eating a high fat, low fiber diet are all risk factors

Prevention

It is difficult to prevent, but the steps for reducing the risk and impact that may form are fairly simple, and can prove otherwise beneficial.

First, drink more water! A well-hydrated body can flush out excess fluids and fat, both of which contribute to the appearance. A good rule to follow is to drink half of your body weight in ounces of water daily. For example, if you weight 150 pounds, you should be drinking 75 ounces of water each day.

Next, be sure to eat a high fiber diet that is low in fat, refined carbohydrates, and sodium is a good place to start. Be sure to get enough exercise, and if you have a desk job, get up and move around as much as possible.

Finally, avoid harmful habits such as smoking, which negatively affect collagen formation and circulation.
