Ozempic, also called semaglutide, is quickly becoming one of the most popular and effective ways to lose weight. With just a few quick injections at home, semaglutide has made it incredibly easy for patients to hit their weight loss goals and see meaningful progress in their wellness journey. Although there are many benefits to weight loss injections like Ozempic, there are unfortunately also some downsides. One increasingly common side effect is a phenomenon called “Ozempic face,” a byproduct of the weight loss process. If you’ve experienced this, then it’s important to know that you have cosmetic options. Here’s what to know about Ozempic face and how we treat it here at Laser Skin & Wellness.

What is Ozempic Face?

Ozempic face is a form of premature aging. It’s typically characterized by a hollower appearance with increased skin laxity in areas like the cheeks. It happens because the deep supportive tissues of the skin don’t adjust quickly enough to the rapid weight loss and thus begin to sag and wrinkle. Even at a relatively young age, Ozempic face can cause you to look older than you really are.

Treatments for Ozempic Face

Thankfully, cosmetic surgery isn’t necessary to fix Ozempic face. There are a few non-surgical treatments that can help reverse the effects of volume loss and contract the skin back into its natural position. We typically recommend a combination approach for best results and can help you explore your best options during a consultation.

Sculptra

Sculptra is a unique injectable treatment that can naturally restore volume. It’s made with poly-L-lactic acid, an ingredient in absorbable sutures that stimulates the production of healthy new collagen. Sculptra has become one of the treatments of choice for signs of aging like volume loss, and in fact has been used for many years to treat facial fat loss associated with HIV (lipoatrophy). Once injected, Sculptra prompts the body to create new collagen and fill in hollow areas – results which can last for up to two years, making it much longer-lasting than traditional hyaluronic acid fillers.

Morpheus8

Morpheus8 is an RF microneedling device that can have compounding benefits when it comes to collagen loss. Microneedling works by generating tiny channels in the skin, a process which creates new collagen as the skin repairs itself. On its own, microneedling can be an incredibly effective way to plump and restore the skin. RF microneedling comes with the benefit of radiofrequency energy, a technology that is famously effective at tightening loose skin. During treatment, Morpheus8 creates tiny channels in the skin and emits RF energy into the deepest layers where it generates gentle heat, causing the connective tissues to contract and tighten. Then, as your skin heals, it generates healthy new collagen and youthful volume.

Cosmetic surgery is a continually changing field with new procedures and treatments being available each year. One of the most popular methods of cosmetic treatment is with dermal fillers. Dermal fillers are minimally invasive cosmetic treatments that rejuvenate the skin by treating aging signs such as wrinkles and lost volume. Sculptra® is an injectable volumizing product that is very different from dermal fillers and was approved for cosmetic use by the FDA. For the past 10 years, our team at Laser Skin & Wellness has been offering Sculptra® to our patients who wish to revamp their skin without the need for surgery.

What is Sculptra®?

Sculptra® is an injectable product that helps to stimulate collagen for long-lasting results. The main ingredient in Sculptra® is poly-L-lactic acid which is classified as a collagen stimulator. This helps the skin look tighter, smoother, and firmer. You can enjoy the results from Sculptra® for up to two years or longer. Sculptra® is injected into the skin to diminish wrinkles, fine lines, and to restore fullness to aged skin. Some immediate results will be noticeable, but it can take a few months to see the most dramatic results as collagen production is rebuilding.

Targeted Areas for Sculptra®

Sculptra® is used for facial wrinkles and folds but it can also assist with hollow areas such as the temples. The Laser Skin & Wellness team will map out points of injection on your face to suit your concerns and improve your skin’s appearance. The total treatment time for Sculptra® is between 40 and 60 minutes to complete.

How Much Sculptra® will I need?

For the best results, most patients receive 2 to 3 treatments spaced over 4-6 month period. One vial per decade of life is typically the recommended protocol. For instance, a 40 year old patient would need a total of 4 vials, split into two treatments of 2 vials each, with 2 months in-between treatments. Then we recommend the Beauty Club for monthly treatments to maintain results and re-evaluation yearly.

Why Sculptra® over Dermal Fillers?

Patients love this treatment because of the beautiful, natural, long-lasting results and there is no downtime associated with the treatment. You can get right back to your day as soon as you leave the office except for heavy gym workouts for a few days. Some redness and swelling might be present for a few hours after Sculptra® injections. The big difference between Sculptra® and dermal fillers is that Sculptra® stimulates your own collagen and dermal fillers “fill” an area instantly and last for 9-12 months.
