Ozempic, also called semaglutide, is quickly becoming one of the most popular and effective ways to lose weight. With just a few quick injections at home, semaglutide has made it incredibly easy for patients to hit their weight loss goals and see meaningful progress in their wellness journey. Although there are many benefits to weight loss injections like Ozempic, there are unfortunately also some downsides. One increasingly common side effect is a phenomenon called “Ozempic face,” a byproduct of the weight loss process. If you’ve experienced this, then it’s important to know that you have cosmetic options. Here’s what to know about Ozempic face and how we treat it here at Laser Skin & Wellness.

What is Ozempic Face?

Ozempic face is a form of premature aging. It’s typically characterized by a hollower appearance with increased skin laxity in areas like the cheeks. It happens because the deep supportive tissues of the skin don’t adjust quickly enough to the rapid weight loss and thus begin to sag and wrinkle. Even at a relatively young age, Ozempic face can cause you to look older than you really are.

Treatments for Ozempic Face

Thankfully, cosmetic surgery isn’t necessary to fix Ozempic face. There are a few non-surgical treatments that can help reverse the effects of volume loss and contract the skin back into its natural position. We typically recommend a combination approach for best results and can help you explore your best options during a consultation.

Sculptra

Sculptra is a unique injectable treatment that can naturally restore volume. It’s made with poly-L-lactic acid, an ingredient in absorbable sutures that stimulates the production of healthy new collagen. Sculptra has become one of the treatments of choice for signs of aging like volume loss, and in fact has been used for many years to treat facial fat loss associated with HIV (lipoatrophy). Once injected, Sculptra prompts the body to create new collagen and fill in hollow areas – results which can last for up to two years, making it much longer-lasting than traditional hyaluronic acid fillers.

Morpheus8

Morpheus8 is an RF microneedling device that can have compounding benefits when it comes to collagen loss. Microneedling works by generating tiny channels in the skin, a process which creates new collagen as the skin repairs itself. On its own, microneedling can be an incredibly effective way to plump and restore the skin. RF microneedling comes with the benefit of radiofrequency energy, a technology that is famously effective at tightening loose skin. During treatment, Morpheus8 creates tiny channels in the skin and emits RF energy into the deepest layers where it generates gentle heat, causing the connective tissues to contract and tighten. Then, as your skin heals, it generates healthy new collagen and youthful volume.

When considering your options for any product, it’s normal to choose the brands you’ve heard about. On the filler market, Restylane® is one big name that you’ve most likely heard of. Restylane® actually isn’t just one filler – it’s a family of hyaluronic acid injectable treatments that are formulated for a variety of uses. It can be overwhelming to figure out which one is best for you, so here’s a quick guide to Restylane® fillers and what they do.

Restylane®

This filler goes by the name Restylane®, but it’s not to be confused with the brand. It’s an all-around filler that can restore lost volume in the skin, fill in tear troughs, and plump up facial wrinkles and folds. Additionally, it can enhance the lips for a naturally balanced look. You can expect results for up to 18 months with this option.

Restylane® Silk

Restylane® Silk is an excellent filler option for all things concerning the mouth. While it can augment the lips for a full, prominent look, it can also smooth lines and folds around the mouth like smoker’s lines or lipstick lines. Since the mouth is a very mobile area of the face, it’s metabolized faster – meaning Restylane® Silk can last 6-9 months.

Restylane® Kysse

Restylane® Kysse is the most natural-feeling option for lip augmentation. The formula is extremely malleable and infuses with your natural lip tissue for a silky-smooth feel. For patients who want fuller, more plush lips with less product, Kysse is one of the best options available. It also lasts longer than other lip filler options, with results lasting 10-12 months.

Restylane® Lyft

Restylane® Lyft is an effective way to lift the cheeks without surgery. With a deep and stable injection, it can add volume and shape to the cheekbones (and hands) for a more youthful, pronounced profile. With a more viscous formula, it can support natural facial expressions for around 6 months.

Restylane® Contour

As another cheek filler, Restylane® Contour takes a different approach. This option is a much silkier alternative to Lyft because it’s meant to restore midface volume loss under the cheekbones. It can move with your unique facial expressions for a natural, indistinguishable look. Restylane® Contour can last for up to 1 year.

Restylane® Refyne and Defyne

These two options are both excellent ways to correct laugh lines around the mouth as well as overall folds in the midface. However, they have some slight differences – Refyne is best for mild to moderate wrinkles and uses a thinner formula for better flexibility while expressing. On the other hand, Defyne can fill in moderate to severe smile lines with a thicker, more supportive formula.

Increasingly, patients are choosing non-invasive cosmetic treatments over surgery. Dermal fillers are growing in popularity, as they can treat signs of aging such as wrinkles and lost volume without the long recovery periods associated with plastic surgery. In addition, dermal fillers can be used to augment the lips, nose, or earlobes.

At Laser Skin & Wellness, we offer a variety of dermal fillers including Restylane®, Versa, and Radiesse®. Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about dermal fillers.

How Do Fillers Work?

Dermal fillers are typically made using hyaluronic acid. This is a substance that naturally occurs in the body and gives skin a plump appearance. Fillers are injected into the skin to increase fullness and regain a plump appearance. They can be used to build volume or to “fill in” wrinkles.

How Long Do Fillers Last?

The ingredients in dermal fillers are eventually broken down by the body, then safely and naturally flushed away. The results of filler injections are not permanent, but the duration varies between individual products. Some dermal fillers break down within six months, while others last up to two years.

Do Dermal Filler Injections Hurt?

Dermal fillers can be slightly uncomfortable, but topical anesthetic is typically applied to the treatment area to relieve pain from injections. Some brands of dermal filler products have anesthetic included in their formulas as well.

What’s the Difference Between BOTOX®/Dysport® and Dermal Filler?

BOTOX® or Dysport® and dermal fillers can be used to minimize wrinkles, but they work in different ways. BOTOX® or Dysport® temporarily paralyzes the facial muscles, so wrinkles can’t form or worsen as the patient makes facial expressions. Dermal fillers, however, plump the area they are injected into, effectively “filling in” the wrinkle. The Laser Skin & Wellness team will determine which injectable is best for you during a consultation.
