No matter where you are while you read this, there are a few things that you can start doing this very second to prevent breast cancer. The hardest part of any journey is taking the first step, and sadly, so many of us don’t even make it that far because we never take action. So pick one simple act on the list that you can do right now and get started on your breast cancer prevention journey!
#1: 10 jumping jacks
That’s right, even if you’re sitting at a desk and there are co-workers around, you can get up and do 10 jumping jacks, squats, push-ups, arm circles, or whatever gets your heart pumping. Exercise is important to preventing breast cancer, and taking small steps to be more active throughout the day is a great way to get started.
#2: Choose a fruit or veggie over a sweet or carb heavy option
Swapping one unhealthy snack or side dish a day for a fruit or veggie will make a huge difference over the course of a year. They have more nutrients and antioxidants that help prevent breast cancer compared to many alternatives.
#3: Take three deep breaths
Stress can wreak havoc on our body so take the time everyday when you’re feeling tense to take three deep breaths. This will lessen your tension and clear your mind. If you have a little more time, take a few minutes to meditate afterwards.
#4: Call a good friend
Call a dear friend and pay them a compliment. Even if you just get their voicemail, let them know that they’re amazing and you value them. Small acts of kindness can lift our spirits and improve our health.
#5: Read an article
Spend 5 minutes reading an article about breast cancer awareness. The more knowledge you have about what it is, how to prevent it, and how to support others who have been diagnosed, the better. When you are done reading the article, share it with someone you love that could also benefit from the knowledge.
#6: Give yourself a self-breast exam
Okay, this one you might not be able to do this very second if you don’t have any privacy, but it was very important to put on the list. However, what you can do right now is go ahead and set a reminder on your calendar for a good time to give yourself a breast exam. Then do #4 and tell them to put it on their calendar as well.
#7: Make an appointment
